H-200 Intro To Honors Course

As a student in the honors college, I am equipped with plenty of tools to help me be successful as a current undergraduate. Among these tools are also resources that allow me to prepare and be as prepared as possible for my future career. In my pursuit of becoming a dentist, the honors college has helped me derive a step-by-step plan that gets me to where I want to be. Below are some of the projects we have worked on in our introductory course!

"I Am" Statement

I am a highly driven person who gives my all to any task that come my way. I take pride in my ability to balance my commitments of being a neuroscience major on a pre-dental track while simultaneously tackling the life of a student-athlete. I find purpose in leading people as shown by being a team captain for the Women’s Soccer team here at IUPUI as well as taking on the role of a Peer-Led Team Learning leader among other campus involvement. I value my family more than anything as they’ve always supported me and encouraged me to be the best version of myself while living with a compassionate heart. I am always looking to learn more, which plays into my love of traveling and discovering life abroad, trying new foods, and meeting people far different than me along the way.

"I want to become" Statement

I am a highly driven individual who gives my all to anything that comes my way. I take the utmost pride in my ability to balance my life between playing collegiate soccer, being a neuroscience major pursuing a medical career, and finding time to spend with the people who mean the most to me. I find stability in my natural leadership qualities that allow me to help those around me; this has given way to my participation in multiple volunteering activities, taking the role of captain of my team, and involvement in many extracurricular clubs/opportunities. I have come across obstacles in my life that have done nothing but shape the person I am today; I wouldn’t trade these experiences, good or bad, for the world. While I am proud of who I am today, I have strong aspirations for the future-me, as well. I am putting in the work to get accepted into dental school and hope to excel in that pursuit. I want to keep my family close and continue to grow in my relationships because that is what makes a person whole in my opinion. I plan to continue to set my goals high, knowing I can achieve anything I put my mind to whether it be completing a fellowship in orthodontics or winning a pickleball championship with my brother, both of which I can foresee in my future. I will strive to challenge myself in new ways every day, staying humble and learning from my peers. I will be someone who has no regrets and takes nothing for granted. I want to be defined by the things and people that I love.

Reflection on Myself

My undergraduate experience so far has changed me completely. I have been challenged in ways I never imagined from a self-growth standpoint all the way to my health. I feel as though I have made tremendous strides towards who I want to become, but there is only more for me to go.

When writing my "I Am" statement, I was able to reflect on who I am now, however, I became even more excited about where I would be in the future. I changed my career path just last year from pre-medical to pre-dental which required a lot of courage and a well thought-out plan to achieve my dreams. Writing my "I Want to Become" statement allowed me to set realistic goals and to have those down in writing. Imaging what my life COULD be like is much different than setting a path to get there; I am glad I had the opportunity to do so. Both of these assignments have allowed me to create a foreseeable future from the person I am already proud of.

My Roadmap

Summary & Reflection

My end career goal is to become a dentist, however, the path to get there is a long one. In my map I have included my past experiences that have shaped me most into who I am today. I have gone through may events that have tested my character and allowed me to grow into the proud person I am today.

Creating this road map allowed me to visualize what I want my life to be like in the future.  It got me excited about what I can become and the positive features of my future career. Including fun ideas like opening a coffee shop and having a lake house allowed me to remember the relaxation time that will come with my dream life.

When reflecting on this map, I realized that I am on the right track towards the life I want. I put in a lot of hard work to get accepted into dental school at my dream college and couldn't be more excited to embark on that journey. I know with my hard work I can get to where I envision, or even further than that. I am also confident that I can adapt to anything life throws at me if I keep a positive mindset!
